Progressive animal husbandry is influenced essentially by molecular genetic analyses. The genetic analyses are separated into two main fields: Parentage analyses and identity controls respectively, and the determination of different genetic defects (see Technologie).

The range of services of Certagen covers both fields. We process numerous, in animal husbandry relevant DNA-tests in cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, and dogs. Parentage- and identity-test are based on sets of internationally acknowledged (ISAG, International Society for Animal Genetics) microsatellites. In a series of direct analyses of mutations, several significant genetic defects in animal husbandry are detected. Our processes accord to a strict quality management, according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005. Certagen is acknowledged by ICAR (International Committee for Animal Recording) as one of fourteen labs worldwide (last update: June, 9th 2008), and by the French Ministry for Agriculture for parentage testing in cattle.

Our analytical programme is complemented by the innovative system for simple and reliable sample withdrawal, the eartag with tissue sampling and modular extensions of our cooperation partner Biopsytec Analytik und Logistik GmbH. The core of this system is the samplecap, the standardised sample container. IT-supported systems, developed by Biopsytec, support the user in organising, managing and storing biological samples.

Beginning with the receipt of the samples and ending in the data analysis, every step is regulated by the innovative data management. Every sample container has an individual barcode, which is stored in our database, together with other relevant information on the sample and the client. This guaranteed unique code on every samplecap allows the quick, simple and reliable management and storage of samples, which will be analysed at a later point of time. By consequent implementation of the system on the laboratory scale processing of sample material, we developed a workflow, which minimises the manual effort ("hands on sample") and reduces the total costs and the risk of errors in processing of the samples drastically.

Basically, all nucleus-containing materials (e.g. skin, hairroots, and blood) are suitable for our analyses . In cattle, pig and sheep, sample withdrawal with the Biopsytec-system - eartag with tissue sampling - provides the consequent implementation of all demands on successful and correct sampling, animal protection, and economic efficiency.

Certagen's Team emerged out of a group of researchers at the University of Bonn. It was the first completely privately financed service provider in Germany, which offered molecular genetic tests in animal husbandry. Since then, we are operating at the cutting edge and always keen on providing reasonable tests for the animal breeder. Regular internal trainings assure that our laboratory staffs are steadily informed on the state of the art. Furthermore, we are proud on our astounding low personnel turnover, which guarantees our clients being serviced by skilled and technically versed staff members.

Because of our quite high annual sample turnover, we are able to realise quite low purchase prices with our suppliers. This advantage allows us to provide prices, which are even competitive, compared to University labs. See for yourself and ask for our actual pricelists or an individual quotation!
